HOMES: Ottawa’s VoK Design Group given carte blanche to design this dream kitchen on the canal

Talk about the perfect commission! When Dylan O’Keefe and Thu Vu of VoK Design Group recently launched a business together, one of their first jobs was to design a full house for a client who was looking to move from Manotick into the city. “The client gave us carte blanche,” says O’Keefe. “She was what you would call a dream client.” The talented designers then got to work drawing up plans for the dream house — complete with a dream kitchen — on an infill property overlooking the canal. The client, who had loved the open-concept kitchen, dining room, and living room in her former home, made just one stipulation: that her new kitchen be just as open. The designers started with the big bank of windows along one wall and designed outwards, centring the kitchen on the middle pane. Their wood of choice was walnut — it’s modern but has gravitas. O’Keefe and Vu then opted for recessed pulls on the cabinets so as not to draw attention away from the horizontal grain of the wood. The giant island, a.k.a. command central, is almost a sculptural element, at once adding pizzazz and acting as an anchor for the room. A sliding frosted screen on one wall cleverly hides a recessed home office.

This kitchen may be functional but it isn’t beautiful, pretty, nor classy for a lady owner, not even pleasant-looking. Walnut was modern maybe 20 years ago but not in 2012, and there is way too much of it in one space, it creates an impression that designers forgot to line the ceiling with walnut as well. Giant island, “a.k.a. command central” (by the way, why do men like applying military terms to traditionally women-dominated kitchen space?), is a very simple rectangular box reminiscent of a giant coffin. Worst of all are the eBay chairs, they are just plain ugly and, from the look of their seats, not comfy at all. Fail.

“but it isn’t beautiful, pretty, nor classy for a lady owner…”
LADY owner?!  I guess the 95 in your handle represents your age.  Enjoy your carpet-covered recliner.

ah.. an ad hominem attack because you disagree with someone else’s post. This reminds me of third grade. For a more productive arguement, try discussing the criticisms. Even “But I love eBay chairs… I do not agree that they are ugly and I have one and they are super-comfy” would be a better retort.

I think this kitchen is amazing. I love the walnut very in right now. As for the eBay chairs they are very retro and certainly fit very well with the whole room.
